Aberaman Community Facility Campaign Reaches Important New Stage

The campaign for improved community facilities in Aberaman has reached an important stage following months of correspondence, petitions, and community support.

After a petition signed by 234 residents was submitted, local MP Gerald Jones contacted Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council on behalf of residents seeking answers about the future of community provision in Aberaman.

In its latest response, the Council confirmed that it currently has no plans to build a new community facility in Aberaman. However, the Council has now stated that its Community Development Team will work with local councillors and community partners to explore how existing buildings in the area could potentially be used to support community activities and local needs.

The Council has also confirmed that further community engagement work is expected to take place to better understand what residents would like to see in the future.

Campaign organiser Elwyn Thomas said that while residents remain disappointed that no commitment has been made towards a new centre, it is important that the issue is now being formally recognised and discussed.

The campaign has also involved correspondence with the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales. While the Ombudsman concluded the matter did not fall within its legal powers to investigate further, the wider community concerns remain ongoing.

Residents are now being encouraged to become involved by sharing ideas, views, memories, and suggestions about what kind of community provision would best serve Aberaman in the future.

A community Facebook page has been created where updates and discussion can continue:

Thanks have been expressed to everyone who signed the petition, shared information locally, and continued to support efforts to improve community provision in Aberaman. Supporters say the campaign has already succeeded in ensuring the issue cannot simply be ignored and that continued community involvement will be essential in shaping whatever happens next.

Further updates are expected once the Council begins its proposed engagement work with the community.
