9-Year-Old Aberdare Martial Artist Selected to Represent Team GB atEuropean Championships

A talented 9-year-old from Aberdare has been selected to represent Great Britain at
the upcoming European Martial Arts Championships in Germany this August.
Sonny Williams, a pupil at Llwydcoed Primary School, has earned his place on the
Team GB Martial Arts Team, the highest level he can get to in Karate, following 5
years of dedication, discipline and competitive success.
This will not be Sonny’s first time competing at the European level. In 2024, he proudly
represented Wales at the European Championships in London, returning home with
an incredible three bronze medals. Since then, he has continued to progress,
achieving his brown belt and multiple championship titles.
As a single, full-time working mum, Dinah has travelled across the UK to support
Sonny’s training, competitions and development — often self-funding travel,
accommodation and training costs.

Now selected to compete in Germany, Sonny is fundraising to cover the competition
fees, travel, kit and accommodation costs.
“I just love martial arts and representing my country makes me really proud,” said
Sonny. “I want to do my best and bring home a medal for Team GB.”
Local businesses and community supporters are invited to get behind Sonny on his
journey to the European Championships.
