Handheld scanners will be used to search children suspected of having a weapon in Cardiff schools under new guidance. The guidelines are the first of their kind in Wales.
Reports of physical assaults on teachers and knife-related incidents are at their highest recorded levels.
The Welsh Conservatives have heavily criticised Labour and Plaid Cymru Senedd politicians for voting against a Welsh Conservative motion to take a zero-tolerance approach and automatically exclude students carrying weapons into schools.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Children, Young People and Education, Natasha Asghar MS, said:
“It is a national disgrace that schools in our capital have become so lawless that they need these new scanners.
“After 26 years of Labour, propped up by Plaid, school violence is at record levels and we have regular reported incidents of attacks on teachers.
“The Welsh Conservatives would restore school safety and discipline by introducing automatic exclusions for those carrying weapons into schools. We put this to a vote in the Senedd back in April, but Labour and Plaid MSs rejected our zero-tolerance approach.”
