Jason O’Connell MS praises Merthyr Tydfil fire service for wildfire response

Reform MS Jason O’Connell has praised Merthyr Tydfil’s fire service for its outstanding efforts in tackling the unprecedented number of wildfires seen across the area this summer.

Mr O’Connell recently met with local firefighters to hear directly about the challenges they have been facing and the pressure placed on crews responding to fires across Merthyr Tydfil and the wider South Wales Valleys.

He also highlighted the important contribution made by local farmers, who have worked alongside the emergency services to help tackle wildfires and protect communities, farmland and the countryside.

Jason O’Connell MS said:

“I want to put on record my thanks to firefighters in my constituency and across Wales for the incredible work they are doing to keep our communities safe.

“What they are dealing with is unlike anything we have seen before, and they have shown tremendous professionalism and dedication throughout.

“I was also keen to recognise the role farmers have played; putting their own time and resources into helping tackle these fires.

“I have now written questions to the Plaid Cymru Government on what emergency support is available to fire services and whether farmers facing significant fuel costs as a result of this response will receive the help they need.”
