Leisure centres across Caerphilly County Borough have joined the Gwent Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme, helping mothers feel comfortable and supported when breastfeeding while out in the community.
Caerphilly Early Years & Childcare Service and Aneurin Bevan Health Visiting Professionals have led on signing up venues across Caerphilly, working with the council’s Sport and Leisure Services to bring local leisure centres into the scheme.
The Gwent Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme is a partnership approach involving Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme includes all boroughs within Gwent – a Gwent-wide approach. It helps parents identify public places where they can breastfeed with confidence.
By joining the scheme, participating leisure centres have pledged to welcome and support breastfeeding throughout their public areas, ensure staff understand the needs of breastfeeding mothers and their babies and provide a comfortable and appropriate space where possible.
The Breastfeeding Welcome logo will be displayed at participating centres, helping parents recognise that they are in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Our leisure centres are community spaces for everyone. We want mothers to feel comfortable and supported if they need to breastfeed during their visit. Joining the Gwent Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme reinforces that our leisure centres are welcoming community spaces for everyone.”
Businesses, community venues and other organisations are also encouraged to sign up to the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme.
