Labour Failing To Address Chronic School Attendance Crisis

Rhondda Cynon Taf Labour Councillors Cutting School Transport is not the right way to get children to attend school.

Estyn report reveals that secondary school attendance rates may not recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2034. The report highlights that students are missing nearly 11 more days of education annually than they were before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Estyn. Pupils from low-income backgrounds and living within the three-mile radius who do not qualify for free school transport face significant barriers to regular attendance. Thanks to the Labour Councillors in the RCT Council

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education Natasha Asghar MS, said:

“These findings are a damning indictment of the Welsh Labour Government’s inability to address the chronic absenteeism that continues to plague our schools. For attendance rates to take over a decade to recover is simply unacceptable and demonstrates a complete failure of leadership and planning.

“Labour must get a grip on attendance, simply tinkering around the edges or offering vague reassurances will not suffice as they continue to put the futures of an entire generation at risk.

“Labour’s failure to address these challenges has left Welsh education in crisis. Weak guidance, underfunding, and a lack of support for teachers are failing our children. Welsh education is broken under Labour—only the Welsh Conservatives can fix it.”
