Drainage maintenance works to begin at Penrhiwceiber tip site

Residents are advised that routine works will be taking place over the weeks ahead at the disused Penrhiwceiber coal tip site, using Welsh Government funding.

The works area is located generally to the south and south-west of the B4275 Pentwyn Avenue, the stretch of road between Penrhiwceiber and Tyntetown/Ynysyboeth.

The scheme will include routine vegetation clearance, and will get underway in the week commencing Monday, August 3 – lasting up to six weeks.

Delivered by the RCT Streetcare Team, part of the works will be focused around drainage channels and culverts, to reduce the risk of blockages within the on-site drainage network.

Another element of the scheme will focus on clearing important locations to ensure future tip inspections and maintenance activity can be achieved more easily.

Please note, ecology has been an important consideration in this scheme’s design, with habitat management enhancing biodiversity by maintaining open habitat corridors across the site.

The scheme is expected to cause minimal disruption, with some limited noise disturbance possible and a small increase in construction traffic locally (8am-5pm, Mondays to Fridays).

The scheme has received funding through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant in 2026/27. The Council has secured £13.7 million from this Grant to continue inspections, maintenance, and works across former coal tip sites in Rhondda Cynon Taf this year.
