REMINDER. A465 Weekend closure between Cefn Coed (A470 Junction) and Dowlais from 20:00 on Friday 03 February until 06:00 Monday 6 February 2023.

This closure is taking place to allow for the demolition of both High Street and Taff Trail bridges at Cefn Coed. Once the work starts, for safety reasons it must be completed over the weekend to ensure the A465 reopens on the Monday morning.

The removal of the bridges is likely to be loud, as we aim to complete a vast amount of complex work over a single weekend.  As a result, we have worked with our subcontractor to develop a works plan to reduce noise as much as possible.  Mitigation measures will be implemented to reduce noise, with the work package split into ‘noisy’ and ‘less noisy’ shifts.

Noisy Shifts – Saturday and Sunday Days

These works will include the use of multiple excavators with breaker attachments to remove the deck of High Street bridge and also the abutments of Taff Trail bridge.  We will also be undertaking the movement of materials and lifting operations.

Less Noisy Shifts – Friday, Saturday and Sunday Nights

These works will include the installation and removal of material used to protect the A465 road surface throughout the works.

On High Street bridge, the removal of pedestrian guard rails, the use of munchers to remove the deck, the removal of material from the area. Whilst we will try to avoid the use of breakers through the night, some breaking may take place. We will be taking care to minimise noise wherever possible, although operations will be loud.

On Taff Trail bridge, we will be using cutting equipment on the metal structure and a crane to lift sections of the bridge out.  Again, whilst we will try to avoid the use of breakers through the night, some breaking may take place. We will be taking care to minimise noise where possible, although operations will be loud.

We continue to engage and consult with local Environmental Health Officers throughout this process, to ensure Best Practical Means are applied and we will be monitoring the works closely throughout the weekend closure.

Despite our best efforts, due to the nature of the work it is likely that it will be disruptive, and we would like to thank residents in advance for their continued patience and support.

We are providing early notification of the work so that residents are aware of the planned works, in advance of the date.

Once this work is completed, we will begin the construction the new bridges, which will be opened later this year.

Please note the temporary footbridge at Cefn Coed will remain open during these works.
