Wales has stated that next year’s GCSE and A-Level exams will continue to be graded more generously than before the pandemic

Qualifications Wales are kicking the can down the road, say Welsh Conservatives

Qualifications Wales has stated that next year’s GCSE and A-Level exams will continue to be graded more generously than before the pandemic, this is despite the UK Government confirming that exam grades in England will return to pre-pandemic levels next summer.

Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative Shadow Education Minister, Laura Anne Jones MS said:

“We, in the Welsh Conservatives, have been warning that not bringing grade inflation under control at the same rate as England risks kicking the can down the road and disadvantaging pupils in the years to come.

“It makes little sense to take a different approach to England to tackle grade inflation, given our shared experience through the pandemic. We do not want to see Wales treated less seriously than the other nations of the UK, particularly as regards to University admissions.

“This decision seems poorly judged and we encourage Qualifications Wales to reconsider their position given the UK Government’s positive announcement of a return to normality.”

In line with UK Government plans set out last September, Ofqual has confirmed a return to pre-pandemic grading in 2023.
