Doctors must be proactive, responsive and respected
Dr Olwen Williams OBE has been elected vice president of the RCP for Wales from January 2020 onwards.
As vice president for Wales, Dr Williams will work with colleagues across Wales and the UK to speak on behalf of the 1,300 doctors in Wales for a variety of campaign priorities, including the medical workforce, high quality care to patients and inequalities health.
During the next three years, his priorities will be:
- Ensure that doctors feel that they are supported and appreciated by NHS Wales
- Challenge health inequalities and ensure high quality health care to vulnerable people
- Ensure that patients are the central focus of the NHS and that it is accessible.
Taught at the University of Liverpool, Dr Williams has worked as head of medicine for the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in North Wales, where he was responsible for basic medicine, and specialized community between 2009 and 2015. At present there our clinical director of the Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC) Amethyst where will continue its duties as a clinical consultant in genito-urinary medicine and HIV medicine.
He is president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, an elected member of the Royal College of General Council, and elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. He was vice president of the Medical Women's Federation for between 2016 and 2019. In 2000, she was selected as Woman of the Year and, in 2005, was awarded an OBE for services to medicine in Wales.
Dr Williams will take up his post on January 1, 2020 when Dr Gareth Llewelyn quit. She speaks Welsh and more than happy to do interviews in English or Welsh.
