Pupils guide Cwmaman residents on tour of new £7.2m school site
Cwmaman residents have seen for themselves the excellent progress being made in constructing their community’s new £7.2m primary school – having been shown around the site by local pupils.
Thanks to funding from #RCTinvest match-funded by the Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, a new multi-million pound school – Cwmaman Primary School – will welcome pupils from Glynhafod Juniors and Cwmaman Infants this September. The existing schools operate on two sites around a mile apart, and the new school will open in a single, state-of-the-art building off Glanaman Road.
The wider development, which will be completed for the start of the 2018/19 academic year, includes a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), staff car park, on-site pupil drop-off area, grass sports pitches, external pupil spaces and a dedicated room which will be available for community use.
On Friday, April 20, members of Glynhafod Junior School’s school council, hosted by the Council’s contractor Morgan Sindall, led a guided tour of the site to members of the community who had been invited to attend by the pupils.
It is now just under four months until the pupils will start benefitting from the new facilities, and the group of young people and residents saw the excellent progress being made on site. Building works and the construction of external spaces are at an advanced stage – with some elements nearing completion.
Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The new school in Cwmaman will transform the village’s education offer, and demonstrates our commitment to delivering investment in 21st Century Schools.
“Great progress continues to be made on site, with the building and wider development well on course for completion on schedule. Local pupils have had a number of visits to see the progress being made on site over the past weeks and months, hosted by the Council’s contractor Morgan Sindall – and they even held their school Christmas carol concert there in December.
“The new school will become an important part of the community, and will include a dedicated room for the use of local groups.
“It is an exciting year for education in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with the £7.2m investment in Cwmaman being delivered alongside the huge £85m investment in Rhondda and Tonyrefail Schools, as the Council’s joint 21st Century Schools investment with the Welsh Government continues to provide more and more young pupils with the best opportunities in their schooling.”
