Deadline extended for community groups in Wales to apply for £10,000 healthy heart funding

Community groups in Wales that help local people look after their hearts can still apply for a regional grant of up to £10,000 after the deadline was extended to Monday 11 June.

The Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart Grant is available for original and innovative community projects that promote heart health and reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Projects should aim to promote activities such as cooking skills, healthy eating, improving physical activity levels and mental wellbeing, all with a focus on a heart healthy lifestyle.

The £10,000 has been raised locally in Subway® stores throughout Wales, and through the nationwide Subway Helping Hearts™ Family 5K fun runs including in Newport last July.

Barbara Harpham, Chief Executive at Heart Research UK, says: “The aim of our partnership with the Subway® brand is to encourage people to make good healthy choices and give practical help to do so. This grant will help even more people learn how to look after their heart health and lead healthier, happier and longer lives.”

Sacha Clark, Marketing Director for the Subway® brand in UK and Ireland, says:
“The Subway® brand is delighted that through our partnership with Heart Research UK this funding is now available. Subway® stores in the region have enjoyed fundraising and, combined with money generously donated by our customers in store, we’re proud to be able to offer this grant in Wales.”

Heart Research UK

Heart Research UK is a visionary charity founded in 1967 by Mr David Watson, a working heart surgeon, who realised that patients were dying unnecessarily because of the lack of research into heart disease, especially surgical techniques. Having funded six of the first eight successful UK heart transplants the charity leads the way funding ground breaking, medical research projects into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.

Heart Research UK has been helping hearts near you for over 50 years, funding ground-breaking medical research that benefits patients as soon as possible. Over the last 50 years we have awarded over £25m to support medical research in universities and hospitals across the UK. We’ve also given over £1.7m for innovative community-based lifestyle projects that help people locally to have healthier, happier and longer lives. This funding has been raised in the local community.
