Cardiff firefighter to take on 10 Ironman triathlons over 10 days

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service firefighter is pushing his body to the limit, undertaking 10 Ironman triathlons in 10 days.

Rich Fuller, who’s based at Cardiff Central Fire Station, will attempt the infamous Deca Ironman Triathlon to raise money for three charities; Velindre Cancer Centre, Golau Cancer Foundation and The Firefighters Charity.

In order to complete the challenge, 42-year-old Rich will swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles around the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli.

No stranger to long distance events, he has already completed the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, a mountain “ultramarathon” in the Alps, and finished 3rd place in “The Continuous Brutal Extreme Triple Ironman” in 2015.

Alongside him, colleagues Matt Price, Mark Butler, Kevin Summerhayes and Mark Palmer will be taking part in the deca relay, covering swim, cycle and run stages between them.

Rich said, “The support I’ve received from my friends and colleagues at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been amazing.

“It's going to be a tough 10 days for all involved with the challenge, but it will be worth it if we can raise some valuable funds for our chosen charities.”

Next month, Cardiff Central firefighter Kevin Summerhayes will also be leading South Wales Fire and Rescue Service personnel in attempting to break more world records as they bring Everest to the Welsh capital. 20 firefighters will attempt to climb the distance to the 8,848 metre summit on a ladder in full Service Issue Firekit including helmet, boots and gloves, carrying a Breathing Apparatus set and Cylinder.

In addition, Kevin Summerhayes will take on the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday 1st October. Last year, he broke the record for running a half marathon in full Firekit in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 23 seconds.
