Labour must do more on social mobility

Commenting on the publication of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission’s State of the Nation 2015 report, Shadow Education Minister, Angela Burns AM, said:

“For many years, it has been clear that the Welsh Labour Government needs to do more to utilise the levers at its disposal to drive social mobility in Wales.

“With child poverty higher in Wales than in the rest of the UK, and educational attainment lagging behind neighbouring nations, this report further highlights the grim failures of successive Labour administrations.

“To improve social mobility, the Welsh Government needs to tackle the root causes of poverty.

“From offering a more tailored, balanced approach to education, supporting opportunities for home ownership, and recognising the value of the teaching profession to our society, a cross-cutting approach is vital to ending years of Labour failure.”
