Jason O’Connell MS has criticised Welsh Labour politicians in Newport for opposing proposals to close junctions on the M4, arguing their concerns ring hollow after Welsh Labour cancelled the M4 Relief Road in 2019.
The Reform UK Wales Shadow Cabinet Minister for the Economy and Transport said Labour’s criticism ignores the fact that it was their own government that scrapped the project intended to tackle congestion around the Brynglas Tunnels.
Jason O’Connell MS said:
“Welsh Labour can’t complain about M4 junction closures while defending their decision to scrap the M4 Relief Road. They created this problem, and now they’re attacking the consequences of their own failure.”
“If Labour had built the Relief Road, which Plaid Cymru also scrapped, Newport would have a more resilient motorway network instead of facing years of congestion and disruption. They cannot have it both ways.”
“The M4 is the economic backbone of South Wales. Until we deliver the Relief Road, M4 congestion will continue to hold back jobs, investment and economic growth across the region.”
