Reform’s Shadow Transport Minister, Jason O’Connell MS, has hit back at Plaid Cymru Transport Minister Mark Hooper following suggestions that M4 junctions around Newport could be closed as part of efforts to manage congestion.
He warned the proposal would fail to fix long-standing traffic problems and instead worsen pressure on already overloaded local roads, with residents having already waited years for a lasting solution to the traffic chaos around Newport.
Mr O’Connell stated:
“Plaid’s plan to close M4 junctions won’t solve congestion, it will just push more traffic onto Newport’s already overloaded roads.
“More train stations and closing M4 Junctions are only sticking plaster solutions that do little to tackle the real problem at hand which is the bottlenecks around the Brynglas Tunnels slowing down the South Wales Economy.
“Residents and businesses across South Wales have been waiting years for action, and this issue will not be properly resolved until we finally deliver the M4 Relief Road.
“Instead of punishing motorists with half-measures, the Welsh Government should focus on delivering proper infrastructure improvements that keep South Wales moving and support economic growth.”
