THE DEADLY PRICE OF PARTNERSHIP: Labour and Plaid Fail the NHS While 1-in-4 Welsh People Wait for Care

With only three days to go until the Senedd election, devastating new NHS figures have laid bare a health service in freefall. Despite years of “co-operation” between Labour and Plaid Cymru, targets are being missed, waiting lists are ballooning, and Welsh patients are facing delays nearly 24 times worse than those in England.

Broken Promises, Missing Targets

The latest statistics reveal a “stagnation of failure” across the Welsh healthcare system. Most alarming is the performance for life-saving cancer treatments. Only 57% of patients started their treatment within the 62-day target—miles below the government’s own 75% goal.

The crisis extends from the front door of the hospital to the operating theatre:

  • Ambulance Crisis: “Red” calls (the most life-threatening) missed their target again, with median response times slowing to 9 minutes and 25 seconds.
  • A&E Gridlock: Over 10,939 patients waited more than 12 hours in A&E this March. The Welsh Government’s target for a 12-hour wait is zero.
  • The 1-in-4 Club: Total treatment pathways have hit 687,968. In a nation of 3.1 million, that means nearly 1 in 4 people in Wales are currently stuck on a waiting list.

The “Morgan Gap”: Wales vs. England

First Minister Eluned Morgan, who previously served as Health Minister, has come under fire for repeated failures. Despite promising to eliminate two-year waits by March 2023, and again by March 2024, the “Morgan Gap” remains a chasm.

Currently, 4,517 people in Wales have been waiting over two years for treatment. In England, that figure is just 189.

“These figures lay bare Labour and Plaid’s record over the past 27 years; missed targets, broken promises and patients paying the price,” said Peter Fox, Welsh Conservative Spokesperson for Health. “Cancer waiting times are worsening, and there is no sign of improvement.”

A Vote for Plaid is a Vote for More of the Same

Voters heading to the polls on May 7th are being warned that the current crisis is a joint venture. For the last several years, Plaid Cymru has acted as the “silent partner” in Welsh governance, propping up Labour budgets and policies.

Political analysts suggest that Plaid’s continued support has shielded Labour from true accountability, effectively making a vote for Plaid a vote for five more years of the status quo.

The Choice on Thursday: The Welsh Conservatives have pledged to declare a national health emergency, promising a dedicated Cancer Treatments Fund and an immediate increase in hospital bed capacity to break the A&E deadlock.
