“Cut The Waste, Replace The Funding Formula And Cap Council Tax Rises”

The Welsh Government have announced their provisional settlement for local councils, which includes an average rise of 2.7%, with a range of increases between 2.3% and 4.3% for each of Wales’ 22 local authorities.

The Welsh Conservatives have made clear our plans to cut waste across government, address the fact that some councils are sitting on many millions in reserves, reviewing and replacing the funding formula and to introduce local referendums for councils seeking to raise council tax by over 5% to effectively cap council tax rises.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government, said:

“This Local Government Settlement is proof of the need for fundamental change.

“Successive Labour Welsh Government budgets, which Plaid Cymru allowed to pass, have prioritised wasteful projects, depriving local government of much-needed funding.

“The Welsh Conservatives are clear: cut the waste, review and replace the woefully out-of-date funding formula to address the fact that some councils are sitting on hundreds of millions in reserves, and introduce local referendums to protect the public against inflation-busting council tax rises.”
