Commenting on new figures showing Wales’ economic inactivity rate has risen over the last 12 months by 0.6% to 24.8%, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, said:
“These latest figures show the Welsh economy has continued to flatline with too many people economically inactive.
“We urgently need welfare reform to get people off benefits and into work, where they can pay their taxes and help generate more revenue to invest in better public services.
“The new Plaid Cymru government needs to focus relentlessly on creating the conditions for businesses to start up and expand because this is the only way to grow the Welsh economy and make Wales more prosperous.”
Supplementary budget: Missed opportunity to build a stronger economy
Speaking ahead of the Finance Minister’s statement on the Welsh Government’s Supplementary Budget, Sam Rowlands MS, Shadow Minister for Finance, said:
“This Supplementary Budget should have been an opportunity to take the difficult decisions to build a stronger economy and deliver on the priorities of the people of Wales.
“We needed a budget to support enterprise, help small businesses and attract investment into Wales.
“Plaid Cymru have not set aside a penny for hardworking small business owners in Wales who face higher business rates than in England and farmers too seem to have been ignored.
“This budget offers more of the same tired approach that we saw under Labour. What we need is a budget that cuts taxes and gets the Welsh economy moving.”
