A call for the Labour Government to reform the outdated and unfair local government funding formula
Welsh Conservatives have reiterated their call for the Welsh Labour Government to reform the outdated and unfair local government funding formula in the Siambr today (Wednesday 29th).
Local Government spokesman Sam Rowlands MS pointed to newly released census results that show there are more people than ever before in the older age groups, with 21% of the Welsh population aged 65 and over with 1% aged 90 and over.
Joining Welsh Conservative calls for reform are the Labour-run Monmouthshire County Council, who have added their voice to the demand for a review of the funding formula which creates a ‘winners and losers’ system.
Speaking after, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government, Sam Rowlands MS, said:
“The new demographic data shows that Wales has an ageing population, and proper support for our older people is essential.
“Labour’s current funding formula is inherently unfair, with rural and North Walian councils being among those that regularly lose out.
“There is real cross-party appetite for a change to the funding formula, with the Labour-run Monmouthshire Council joining my calls for reform – Labour ministers should finally recognise the unfairness of their funding system and take action.”
