From Hirwaun and Penderyn and Rhigos Matters Following a recent walkabout in Rhigos, the local councillors reported several areas that have potholes which need attention. We have received the following response from a Highways Officer: “All actionable defects have been identified and issued for repair. Just for info, Heol Esgyn has been added to my list for consideration of resurfacing.”
Update on pedestrian improvements being delivered in Hirwaun
Delivery of the Hirwaun Safe Routes in Communities scheme has now progressed to its third and final location – the pictured section of Harris Street and Brecon Road.
Phase two of the Welsh Government-funded scheme started in November 2024, to deliver further road safety and pedestrian improvements throughout the village, including new safe crossing points.
Work to install infrastructure for a new crossing at High Street/Davies Row was completed first, making good progress before Christmas.
The scheme then moved onto the Rhigos Road/Brecon Road junction in January 2025, the location of a new zebra crossing – and infrastructure works have recently been completed here.
The Council’s contractor, Calibre Contracting Ltd, has now moved onto the third and final location at Harris Street/Brecon Road, starting from Wednesday, February 19. This follows work by Wales and West Utilities at Harris Street, which has recently been completed.
The upcoming Safe Routes work will include improving and upgrading the existing zebra crossing at the junction of Harris Street and Brecon Road, along with additional parking restrictions on Harris Street to improve safety.
Temporary traffic management will be needed for some elements of the work, including temporary signals and one-way traffic at Harris Street.
Final resurfacing will then take place at all three locations – while connections will be completed to bring the three new crossings into operation. This will be completed by spring 2025.
