How many feasibility studies does it take to build the Aberdare Bypass? No wonder there is no money to construct it; the council must have spent millions on consultant fees.
There was a serious accident in Merthyr this week that closed the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road.
South Wales Police reported on 8 January a serious collision in Merthyr Tydfil on the A470. The road is currently closed on the A465 towards A470 at Cefn Coed, Baverstocks, Storey Arms towards A470 and Brecon Road towards A470 Cefn Coed roundabout. It is expected to remain closed for some time.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. Delays are expected in the area.
The road closure highlighted the problem of excess traffic having to use Cynon Valley as the only way to travel south, east, and west. Many vehicles were stuck in the longest traffic jam I have seen in Llwydcoed, once again highlighting the need to construct the Aberdare bypass extension. Looking back on AberdareOnline, there was a press release in 2011 explaining that the Bypass would be completed by 2020

Didn’t the press release say that this road was to be built at the same time as the Heads of the Valleys duelling?
If so that’s to open in 2020 so I guess work on this new link would start a year or two before then so around 2018, that’s only juts 6 years away and with planning, CPO’s, stuff to do with wildlife etc it takes that long to get to the stage of building it.
The sooner this is done and the Heads of the Valleys dulled, the better!

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has successfully secured the funding from the South East Wales Transport Alliance (Sewta). The scheme seeks to extend the A4059 Aberdare bypass to provide a direct link to the Heads of the Valleys road, involving the provision of a new junction on the A465.
The scheme would reduce traffic through the communities of Llwydcoed and Penywaun and create an important new gateway to the Cynon Valley. The scheme complements the council’s regeneration plans for the Cynon Valley and would help attract employers into the area.
The council intends to develop the project to tie in with the Welsh Assembly Government’s proposed dualling of the Heads of the Valleys road and it is important that the scheme progresses in tandem with this work so that the dualling can accommodate a new junction on the A465 between Baverstock’s and Hirwaun.
The plans have been discussed with the Welsh Assembly Government’s transport officials and continues to press for the dualling of the A465 section in Rhondda Cynon Taf to be carried out as early as possible. The proposal in relation to the A4059 has also been incorporated into the council’s new Local Development Plan, which was adopted earlier this month and is due to be published shortly.

August 2024: Revised plans for a Cynon Valley bypass are going to be drawn up after the scheme had been previously been put on hold. Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council leader Councillor Andrew Morgan said that following positive discussions with the Welsh Government, RCT Council is to review the plans for the Cynon Gateway North (A4059 to the A465) with a view to now going ahead with the scheme.
The residents of Cynon Valley want a start date and a completion date for the Aberdare Bypass

The bypass cannot come quick enough. With traffic through Llwydcoed at unprecedented levels it’s only a matter of time before we have a serious accident.
