Absenteeism increasing due to the lack of school transport under Welsh Labour
Commenting on her request for a Business Statement from the Labour Government on school transport in the Senedd today, Welsh Conservative Shadow Education Minister, Laura Anne Jones, MS said:
Back to school is always chaotic this time of year but this year takes the biscuit. Thousands of parents and children have been left anxious as a result of no transport or unstable transport.
“With more than one in four pupils in Wales absent for 15.5 days or more every school year, it’s clear that the current way of doing things are not working, with school transport becoming a massive contributor to school absence.
“The safeguarding and rights of children are also at stake for those who have no choice but to use public transport, due to a lack of an alternative being provided. We need a pupil first approach and a wholesale reform, not just tweaks. Urgent action needs to be taken by Labour, all children should be able to get to school safely.”
