WELSH YOUNG CONSERVATIVES CHAIR RESIGNS OVER PARTY’S SUPPORT FOR PLAID’S UNCOSTED CHILDCARE PLANS

Archie Draycott, former Chair of the Welsh Young Conservatives and fifth on the Welsh Conservative list for the Caerdydd Penarth constituency in the 2026 Senedd election, has resigned from his role and left the Conservative Party with immediate effect.

Mr Draycott said his decision followed the Welsh Conservatives’ decision to lend votes to Plaid Cymru to block the publication of costings for their childcare plans.

He said:

“I have taken the difficult decision to step down as Chair of the Welsh Young Conservatives and to leave the Conservative Party as I can no longer support the direction the party has taken in Wales.

“It beggars belief that not even two months into the new Senedd term, the Conservatives are voting to hand the Welsh Government a blank cheque for their childcare plans.

“Conservatives should be challenging the nationalist government, not helping to prop it up.

“The party’s poor election result in May should have prompted a change of direction, but instead, they appear more comfortable cosying up to parties on their left rather than providing robust opposition.

“Unionist and centre-right voters deserve clear representation and, in my view, Reform UK is best placed to provide it.”
