Care funding needs an overhaul to stop homes from closing

Commenting on the news that there are around 500 fewer places in care homes in Wales than there were in 2015, Welsh Conservative Shadow Social Care Minister, Gareth Davies MS said:

“With a larger proportion of the population needing care, this is something that must be fixed. The Labour Government has a responsibility to overhaul funding and provide the investment required to ensure that the ever-increasing number of people requiring care receive the necessary support.

“With the largest generation in history currently in various stages of retirement, the number of those requiring care will increase exponentially within the next few years.

“Future-proofing the profession will help end the long-standing issues in recruiting carers and ensuring there are homes for people to go to. By upskilling care home staff to do things like blood pressure checks will not only make the profession more attractive, it will also play a key part in ending other issues like bed-blocking in hospitals that will improve NHS treatment, A&E, and ambulance waits.”
