A4059 Aberdare Bypass Extension

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “Cabinet has recently received a report outlining progress updates on a number of major transportation schemes ongoing across the County Borough. These are vital projects which the Council has previously made commitments to deliver in the future, and which will have a huge benefit for road users and commuters.

“Many of the projects are at the heart of the Council’s Strategic Opportunity Areas, agreed by Cabinet in September 2017 to explore further opportunities for economic growth. For instance, the Aberdare Bypass and A465 dualling are schemes vital for the Cynon Gateway,"

“It is pleasing to see very good progress made across the board on a number of important projects, and we are entering exciting times on a number of long-awaited schemes. For example, the construction phase for the Cross Valley Link is now underway, and the project will vastly improve traffic flow in Mountain Ash and along the wider A4059 corridor through the Cynon Valley."

A4059 Aberdare Bypass Extension

This project complements Welsh Government’s proposed dualling of the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, by providing a direct link from the Aberdare Bypass, east of Penywaun, to a new junction at Croesbychan on the A465. Welsh Government grant funding up to 2015/16 supported initial surveys and project development, and the project now has a commitment from the Cabinet Secretary to work in partnership with the Council. Construction of the A465 dualling is anticipated in 2020 with completion during 2023 – and the Council’s aspiration is for the A4059 works to start during the A465 project’s construction phase. In total, just £1m has now been allocated to this project.
