Update on consultation on adult chest surgery in South Wales
The Welsh Health Specialised Services committee (WHSSC) has been consulting on the future provision of adult thoracic (chest) surgery across South Wales.
They are looking for views on the proposal to locate a single adult thoracic surgery centre at Morriston Hospital in Swansea serving patients from south east Wales, west Wales, and south Powys. This would be one of the largest thoracic surgery centres in the UK and is intended to provide long term sustainability, the ability to treat more patients and deliver a centre of excellence for the region.
WHSSC have recently completed a mid-point review of this consultation and a report summarising the process and the responses can be found on the WHSSC website.
We are very grateful for all the responses we have received so far and as you will see from the report this has provided us with an opportunity to review emerging themes and update the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). It has also given us an opportunity to consider any further information that will be helpful to Boards when they come to make a decision in the autumn.
We would encourage you to visit the FAQs on the WHSSC website and look at the updates available. We are also undertaking a further piece of work to help describe the arrangements for providing Thoracic Surgery support to the Major Trauma Centre (for the small number of cases where this may be required). This information will be included in the evidence pack that will be submitted to Boards with the consultation outcome.
With 3 weeks remaining of this consultation, we would be grateful if you could encourage as many people as possible to participate and are grateful for your ongoing interest and support.
