‘Supporters & Families set to give it some welly in Aberdare!
Youngsters and the young at heart – are getting ready to don their wellies for the annual Welly Walk around Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare.
Supporters and families who attend Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales will be putting their best foot forward on Saturday 7th October for children in Wales who have cerebral palsy.
The sponsored Welly Walk, which starts with a fun ‘Welly Warm up’ at 10.45am to get young and old ready for the 2 mile trail, will officially begin at 11am. The walk marks the seventh Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month for the charity and is a great event for all the family whatever the weather!
John Penaluna, of Penaluna’s Famous Fish & Chips, Hirwaun is a grandparent to Paige Jenkins, age 10, who attends the Bobath centre, ‘We support the walk each year as a family because of the outstanding work the centre has done with Paige. The sessions at Bobath have been exceptional and every time they move her forward in leaps and bounds. We are all lifted after she’s had her sessions.’
John continues, ‘Although Paige hasn’t been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, many of her symptoms are similar. We chose to support Bobath Wales as we’ve seen the fantastic progress achieved with Paige and I’m sure other children too.’
The aim of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month is to increase people’s understanding of cerebral palsy and awareness of the work that Bobath Wales does for families throughout Wales. Every 6 hours a child is born who will have cerebral palsy and there are an estimated 1,800 children in Wales with the condition. It is a complex and lifelong disability with 1 in 3 unable to walk, 1 in 4 unable to talk and 1 in 2 with an intellectual disability.
Other events during the month include two more Welly Walks in Cardiff and Cwmbran Boating Lake and a Horse Race Night!
Welly Walkers will receive stickers, sponsor forms and balloons when they sign up to the charity walk. · Cerebral palsy is the commonest disability in children in the world today.
- Every six hours another child is born who will have cerebral palsy.
