Labour’s transgender plan “completely unambitious” say Welsh Lib Dems
The Welsh Labour Government’s transgender action plan fails to address some of the most pressing issues faced by trans people in Wales, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have said.
The Welsh Government’s plan (launched today) came about as a result of the Welsh Lib Dems’ landmark Assembly debate in November 2014 – the first time trans issues had been discussed at length by the Welsh Assembly.
Several of the party’s calls in that debate, such as a dedicated Gender Identity Clinic in Wales and LGBT+-suitable safe housing, are not committed to within Labour’s plan
Peter Black AM, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Equalities Minister, said:
“I’m glad that, as a result of the Welsh Lib Dems’ landmark debate, we finally have a Government that’s starting to recognise the problems that trans people in Wales face on a daily basis.
“But truth be told, this plan is completely unambitious. Our calls for a Gender Identity Clinic in Wales have been completely dismissed, and many other important issues have been kicked into the long grass through endless reviews.
“After the high of finally giving these issues the attention they deserve, trans people will quite legitimately be left wanting by this plan. Welsh Liberal Democrats will not let up in our fight for a Wales that works for you, whatever your gender identity.”
