St David’s Day should be made a public holiday, say Welsh Lib Dems
The Welsh Liberal Democrats will propose on Tuesday that St David’s Day is made a national holiday in Wales.
Mark Williams will propose a bill today that will give the Welsh Assembly power to make the day a national holiday.
Parades are held around Wales each year to commemorate Saint David, the largest of which is in Cardiff. The parade is a non-military celebration of Welsh heritage and culture.
Deputy Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Mark Williams MP said:
“I am celebrating St David’s Day by proposing to make it a national holiday.
“St David’s Day is a time for us to celebrate all that is great about Wales, from our entrepreneurial spirit to our rich culture.
“It has been almost a decade since Scotland made St Andrew’s Day a public holiday, and it is time that Wales was given the same power.
“It should be within the spirit of the devolution settlement that Wales, like Scotland and Northern Ireland, has the same powers to determine these matters.”
