Run the Cardiff Half for people with sight loss in Wales
RNIB Cymru wants runners taking part in this year’s Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money to support people living with sight loss in Wales.
This year RNIB Cymru is offering runners the chance to contribute towards the RNIB Talking Books Appeal. Talking Books provide a lifeline for blind and partially sighted people by allowing them to access their favourite audiobooks. There are currently 182 Talking Book users in the Cardiff area alone.
25-year-old broadcast journalist Glesni Euros from Cardiff is one such runner and has chosen to run for RNIB because of the support the charity has offered to her family.
Glesni said: “My mother and uncle both have Stargardt’s disease. RNIB has offered them brilliant support throughout their lives. They’ve met with others who are registered blind. The charity’s shop also makes life more manageable. Products such as large print calendars and weighing scales have been so important to them – particularly for my mother’s career as a teacher and my uncle’s as a lawyer. I’ve seen how the RNIB makes such a difference to the lives of those who are blind or visually impaired.
“My uncle Vaughan raised money for RNIB by doing charity walks, so I’m determined to follow in his footsteps. I enjoy running so I thought I’d give the Cardiff Half Marathon a go. The training’s proved to be much more fun than I thought, and gives me the chance to slowly prepare myself for a new physical challenge – and get a medal at the end of it!
“I’m excited to take part and raise money for this wonderful charity.”
RNIB Runners will receive a t-shirt, fundraising pack and support from RNIB’s local fundraiser.
RNIB’s area fundraising manager for Wales Carol McKinlay said: “The Cardiff Half is a fantastic race and one of the most popular in Wales. It’s a must for any long distance runner. Over 106,000 people live with sight loss in Wales and your fundraising could make all the difference in helping us provide those much needed services and support for them.”
