Free ice creams as Town of Culture Tour comes to Pontypridd

Residents across Pontypridd are being invited to enjoy a free ice cream and find out more about the town’s ambitious bid to become the UK’s first-ever UK Town of Culture, as a specially branded ice cream van visits communities throughout October.

The Pontypridd28 ice cream van will be stopping at locations across Pontypridd, offering free ice creams while encouraging residents to get involved in the bid and share what culture means to them. The tour dates can be found at the bottom of this article. 

The initiative forms part of a wider programme of community engagement, ensuring that people from all parts of Pontypridd have the opportunity to learn more about the bid and help shape its future. 

The van will visit a range of neighbourhoods on Saturday’s during October, bringing the Pontypridd28 conversation directly into local communities and capturing the pride, creativity, heritage and community spirit that make Pontypridd unique. 

Councillor Scott Emanuel, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Leisure, said: “Pontypridd’s UK Town of Culture bid is all about celebrating what makes our town special and ensuring local people have a voice in shaping its future. 

“We want as many residents as possible to get involved, learn more about the bid and tell us what culture means to them. Whether culture means music, sport, heritage, language, food, community events or spending time with friends and family, every perspective matters. 

“We hope people will join the conversation about this exciting opportunity for Pontypridd and make the most of the ice cream!”

  • Hawthorn / Lower Rhydyfelin – Leisure Centre, Fairfield Lane (11.00am – 12.30pm) 
  • Upper Rhydyfelin / Glyntaff – Community Centre, Poets Close (12.30pm – 1.15pm) 
  • Upper Rhydyfelin / Glyntaff – Hospital Road Common, opposite Cottage Hospital (1.15pm – 2.00pm) 

Saturday, 17 October 

  • Treforest – Broadway, near Parc Lewis Primary School (11.00am – 12.30pm) 
  • Graig – Albert Road, near Dewi Sant Hospital (12.30pm – 2.00pm) 

Saturday, 24 October 

  • Cilfynydd – Entrance to Ann Street (11.00am – 12.30pm) 
  • Trallwn – Coedpenmaen Road into Foundry Place, near the footbridge over the A470 (12.30pm – 2.00pm)

  • Rhondda – Pwllgwaun – Outside Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Evan James, Rhondda Road, opposite Lidl (11.00am – 11.30am) 
  • Rhondda – Hopkinstown – Plymouth Road, near Trehopcyn Primary School (11.30am – 12.00pm) 
  • Rhondda – Measycoed – Llanwern Road, near Maes-y-coed Primary School (12.00pm – 12.30pm) 
  • Rhondda – Pantygraig Wen – Mayfield Road, near Graigwen Road (12.30pm – 1.00pm)

Residents will be able to speak to representatives about the bid, find out how to get involved and discover how culture is already thriving across Pontypridd!
