Welsh Conservatives celebrate cadets and call for more opportunities in schools

The Welsh Conservatives have praised uniformed cadet groups across Wales and called on the Welsh Government to invest in expanding access to the opportunities they provide.

Marking National Cadets Week, which runs from 5–11 October, Welsh Conservative Leader Darren Millar highlighted the party’s manifesto commitment to promote new school cadet groups and Cadet Vocational Qualifications.Research published in 2024, Getting an Edge: The Impact and Value of the Cadet Forces in Wales, identified benefits for educational outcomes, employability and social mobility, particularly for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The report also found that participation among secondary school-age children in Wales was below the UK average.

Darren Millar MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:

“Cadet groups provide fantastic opportunities for young people to build confidence, learn practical skills and develop teamwork, discipline and a sense of service to their communities.

“National Cadets Week is a chance to celebrate our cadets and thank the dedicated volunteers who give their time to help young people fulfil their potential.

“The research shows the difference cadet groups can make to education and employment prospects, particularly for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Our manifesto committed to promoting new school cadet groups and Cadet Vocational Qualifications because we want more young people across Wales to benefit from these opportunities.

“The Welsh Government should work with schools and cadet organisations to establish more groups and fund access to valuable qualifications.

“Investing in our cadets is investing in the next generation. Ministers should back these opportunities with practical support so that more young people can take part.”
