Reform MS backs Pontypridd for UK Town of Culture 2028

Pontypridd has been shortlisted as one of the United Kingdom’s first ever Town of Culture candidates, putting the town’s rich heritage, creativity, and community spirit firmly in the spotlight.

Pontypridd is one of the few towns across the United Kingdom which has been selected to progress to the next stage of the competition, with the winning town set to receive a £3 million UK Government grant and host a year-long celebration of culture in 2028.

The shortlist recognises Pontypridd’s unique cultural identity, from its proud musical heritage and world-famous venues to its thriving arts scene, community groups and the passion of local people who continue to shape the town’s future.

The town has long been associated with producing some of Wales’ greatest musical talent, including global icon Sir Tom Jones, whose career helped put Pontypridd on the international stage.

As part of the next stage, Pontypridd will receive £60,000 to develop its full bid to become the UK Town of Culture 2028.

If successful, the award would bring major investment, national recognition and new opportunities for local artists, businesses, young people and communities across Pontypridd.
