Tonypandy man jailed for threats to kill and assault

A man has been jailed for various offences, following a South Wales Police investigation.

The incident happened in August 2026 at an address in Tonypandy.

Jay Thomas, 28, from Tonypandy was jailed for one year and six months following his conviction.

He appeared before Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Thursday, September 17, where Thomas pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault, threats to kill, intentional strangulation, assault by beating, possession of a knife blade/pointed article in a public place and use of threatening/abusive or insulting words.

This followed officers receiving numerous 999 calls from witnesses stating that the victim was being beaten up in the street. Officers arrived at the scene and the victim stated when leaving the house Thomas grabbed her by the hair and put his hand around her throat meaning she couldn’t breathe. Thomas then made threats stating he would “kill” the victim.

When officers got to the scene Thomas was being held by a member of the public who stated he intervened as he saw Thomas hitting the victim. He saw Thomas jump over his garden fence with a pair of scissors in his hands.

Numerous witnesses also stated that Thomas had thrown a butter knife in the air during this incident.

Police Constable Adele Smith said:

“This was a shocking and unprovoked attack; I want to thank the member of the public who intervened and stopped Thomas continuing the attack.
“This incident left the victim shaking and fearing for their life, no one should have to put up with this behaviour, we hope that this sentence will give them some closure.”
