New residents in Cwmbach are celebrating after receiving the keys to their brand new homes on the site of the former Cwmbach Primary School.
The development of the 17 affordable, low-carbon bungalows in Rhondda Cynon Taf by Newydd Housing Association will help to meet local housing needs and have been provided for people seeking housing through Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council’s housing list.
The homes have been a boost for both the local South Wales economy and environment. Timber frame structures for the homes were built by Celtic Offsite at their factory in Caerphilly, and then completed on-site by contractors M&J Cosgrove to reduce the environmental impact. The bungalows were also built with non-fossil fueled heating systems and solar panels to further reduce their carbon footprints and utility bills.
Murals from the previous infants school have been kept on the walls of the estate to connect the development to its history.
This development was made possible thanks to extensive cooperation between Newydd and their partners, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, M&J Cosgrove Construction, and The Welsh Government.
At the handover event last Tuesday to mark the development completion, Newydd Principal Project Manager Rhian Lees, said “Delivering affordable, sustainable houses which meet the needs of the community is at the heart of what we do and we’re delighted these homes are completed and ready for new residents in Cwmbach. This is an excellent example of what can be achieved when partners work towards a common goal and we’re looking forward to seeing these homes contribute to a thriving Cwmbach community.”
