Stephen Pincott is celebrating 30 years with Stagecoach, having joined
Rhondda Buses in 1996 and spent 23 years as a bus driver before moving
into Marketing and Commercial roles.
His career has been about more than buses, with Stephen taking part in
numerous charity challenges and community events, supported by
Stagecoach.
Three decades on, Stephen continues to play a key role behind the scenes,
helping create timetables and maintain customer information while embracing
the technology and changes that have transformed the industry.
Stagecoach is celebrating 30 years of service for Stephen Pincott, whose career has
taken him from driving buses across the South Wales valleys to helping shape the
passenger information and timetables used across the network today.
Stephen joined Rhondda Buses on 5 August 1996, after previously working on
building sites and gaining NVQs in Building and Carpentry.
A friend suggested he try bus driving, and after passing his PCV test with Cardiff
Bluebird, Stephen began what would become a three-decade career in the bus
industry.
He spent his first 23 years behind the wheel, driving a range of buses including
Dennis Darts and Leyland Lynxes, before moving into the Marketing team in 2019.
“I wanted to see how the company worked from a different perspective,” Stephen
said. “As a driver, you don’t necessarily see everything that goes on behind the
scenes.”
His move gave him the opportunity to work on roadside timetables and customer
information, as well as attend community events including Clean Air Day in
Caerphilly and Armed Forces Day in Crosskeys.
Stephen has also been a passionate supporter of charity fundraising during his time
with the company. Alongside colleagues, he has taken part in numerous challenges,
including a 28-mile walk from Maerdy to Cardiff and cycle rides from Rhyl to Cardiff,
Cardiff to Land’s End and Cardiff to Tenby.
“It’s nice to give something back to the community,” he said. “Stagecoach has always
supported everything we’ve done, and it’s great to see colleagues getting involved.”
His work includes creating timetables, coordinating roadside information and
signage, maintaining infrastructure records and working with local councils and
suppliers.
For someone who started his career driving buses without power steering, Stephen
has also embraced the technological changes that have transformed the industry.
“When I started, I had very little experience with computers and software. Now I use
systems such as Crosstown for timetables and Adobe Illustrator for artwork and
templates. Every day is different, and that’s what I love about the role.”
Looking back over three decades, Stephen says the people have been one of the
highlights of his career.
“I’ve met some great characters and made some great friends over the years. I’m a
people person, I like talking to people.”
And after 30 years, Stephen has no plans to put the brakes on his Stagecoach
career.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my 30 years so far and I’m looking forward to many more
years working with the company and meeting many more great people along the
way.”
