Patient’s favourite recipes and memories captured in Velindre’s Charity Cookbook
To mark the 70th Anniversary of the NHS, Velindre NHS Trust asked patients to send their favourite recipes to develop a special charity cookbook.
Along with the recipes, people were asked to send in family photos and their stories on why that recipe was important to them. Velindre dietitians have given tips on making adaptations for those who might be going through cancer treatment.
The cookbook, supported by Hollywood actor Michael Sheen and 9 Welsh based celebrity chefs, including award winning and Michelin star restaurants, will go on sale on the 5th July for £10. Proceeds from the book will go directly to Velindre Fundraising.
Alastair Lloyd send in his delicious recipe for Spicy Bean and Cheese Burritos, saying,
“In 1969 the Americans put a man on the moon, but in 2006 the wonderful people at Velindre kept this man on Earth, something for which I’ll always be truly and deeply grateful”.
The idea for the book came from the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Manager, Ceri Harris, who said,
“Food makes people smile, including me! It brings people together, treats, celebrations and creating great memories. For people going through cancer treatment food can become a struggle, so I wanted to create a safe place to collect those positive memories and celebrate people’s journeys. I’m incredibly humbled by everyone who sent in their recipes and stories.”
The book can be pre ordered by emailing velindrecookbook@wales.nhs.uk and will go on sale on 5th July at Velindre Cancer Centre, several independent bookshops and via Velindre Patient Cook Book Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/Velindre-Patient-Cookbook-Food-Memories-that-make-you-smile-213117176135909
