Royal Voluntary Service is calling for 60 volunteers to support hospital trolleys

Royal Voluntary Service is urgently seeking around 60 Hospital Trolley Volunteers to support patients, staff, and visitors at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

The Hospital trolley service is led by volunteers to support those who are unable, or don’t have time, to visit hospital shops themselves. Volunteers bring refreshments, reading materials, toiletries and healthy treats directly to wards, helping to make hospital stays a little easier.

More than just a shopping service, the iconic RVS trolley offers moments of connection with volunteers who provide a friendly face and a chance to chat, helping to ease some of the worries and loneliness that some might feel during a stay in hospital. For patients who don’t get any visitors during their stay, this service can make all the difference.

As well as supporting patients, the RVS trolley is also a welcome sight for busy hospital staff who might want to pick up a much-needed snack or refreshment during their shift.

Helen Baylis, Retail Area Manager at Royal Voluntary Service, said: “We’re in urgent need of volunteers to support our hospital trolley services in South Wales. This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, supportive team while making a real difference to people’s hospital experience. Our volunteers tell us how rewarding it is to know that even a short visit with the trolley can brighten someone’s day.”

The Trolley Volunteer role is flexible, with slots open for volunteers to take the trolley out on the wards in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

Zainab Ocheni, RVS Trolley Volunteer, said: A lot of the time we find that patients are unable to go and get something from the shop, so when we roll in with the trolley, the moments of happiness and joy that we see are so rewarding.

“If anyone is looking to make an impact, there’s no better way to give back than with RVS. They’re so flexible with their timings, allowing me to fit volunteering around my schedule as a single mum without any pressure.”
