Founded in March this year, the Pontypridd-based volunteer group has made a remarkable impact in a short space of time, playing a pivotal role in keeping local streets, parks and green spaces clean, safe and welcoming. Over the past year, Treforest Litter Pickers have collected an impressive 529 bags of litter, contributed more than 394 hours of volunteering, and engaged over 215 participants in community clean-up events. These achievements highlight the dedication and passion of local residents who give their time to protect the environment and enhance shared community spaces.
Formed by enthusiastic volunteers determined to make a difference, Treforest Litter Pickers have shown that litter picking can be fun, sociable and hugely rewarding. By identifying litter and fly-tipping hotspots, the group established a strong online presence through a Facebook page, sharing updates, promoting clean-up events and inspiring others to get involved.
Ben Hicks, the founder of Treforest Litter Pickers said:
“We are a friendly and enthusiastic group of Treforest residents who meet regularly to pick up litter in our beautiful local area. Our volunteers make such a massive difference to the community. The streets, lanes and green spaces are a lot tidier and we congratulate them for their dedication. We have an amazing team and we are very lucky to have them.
“Treforest is such a great place to live, work and study. It just needs a little bit of care and attention. We have plans to do even more for our local environment in 2026 and we would like to thank Keep Wales Tidy for their support”.
Hywel Tanner-Jones, Rhondda Cynon Taf Project Officer at Keep Wales Tidy, said:
“I’ve loved seeing Treforest Litter Pickers go from strength to strength this year. Over 215 volunteers have taken part in their clean-ups, collecting hundreds of bags of litter and making a real difference in the community. Their passion shows just how rewarding it can be to protect our environment, and we hope their success will inspire even more local people to get involved and experience it for themselves.”
There are lots of ways for people across Rhondda Cynon Taf to get involved. You can join a local community group and take part in regular clean-ups, or borrow free litter-picking equipment from your nearest Litter Picking Hub to do a tidy-up in your own time.
The Litter Picking Hubs, along with community clean-up activities, are part of a nationwide initiative funded by the Welsh Government, helping everyone play their part in keeping Wales clean, green, and beautiful.
