The Welsh government updated its guidance in response to a petition with nearly 470,000 signatures and widespread criticism.

20mph Consultation feedback- Hirwaun, Penderyn and Rhigos Ward

We met with the Council’s Principal Traffic Officer to digest the responses. We are pleased that there was high engagement.

Of the roads considered:

Penderyn

A4059, North of Penderyn Primary- There were 39 responses, 32 in support of the road being reverted back to 30mph.

A4059, South of Penderyn Primary- There were 48 responses, 42 in support of the road being reverted back to 30mph.

Hirwaun

Merthyr Road/Swansea Road- There were 53 responses, 44 in support of the road being reverted back to 30mph.

As your councillors, we will be supporting the above roads to be reverted back to 30mph.

However, whatever the speed of our roads, there needs to be enforcement to make our roads safe. Many residents raised road safety concerns in their responses. We will keep you all informed of what happens next.

We also had an opportunity to discuss additional measures in making our roads safer.

– We know how dangerous it can be for parents and children crossing from one side of Brecon Road to the other, on their way to school. We have asked the Council to consider a safe crossing structure.

– Speed indicators devices (SIDs) are useful in gathering data on the speeds of vehicles that pass, the illuminated sign alerts drivers to the speeds they are travelling at. We have requested one for Brecon Road (coming into the village) and the A4059 in Penderyn (near the LIwyn Onn junction). We have asked for the data of the Rhigos Road SID.

– At the Trebanog Terrace bend, Penderyn the Council will be painting ‘Slow/Araf’ on the road to encourage drivers to slow down here.
