Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Penywaun has relaunched its rugby First XV team for the first time since the Covid pandemic — with vital £3,000 sponsorship support from local renewable energy company, Pennant Walters.
The school, which has a proud rugby tradition, is rebuilding its senior team from the ground up after the £3,000 funding from Pennant Walters has provided much-needed help to buy essential kit and equipment for the players, as well as to cover transport and pitch hire costs for the season ahead.
Ceri Type, Teacher and Director of Rugby at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, explains:
“Restarting our First XV this year marks an important step for the school. Over the years we’ve developed several strong teams, but we often lose our best players to colleges when they reach sixth form. By setting up this team, we’re able to keep more of our talented players here in Rhydywaun, continue their education through the Welsh medium, and keep them in the Cynon Valley.
“This team also gives our younger pupils something to aspire to. With limited financial support from the school budget, Pennant Walters’ £3,000 contribution has been essential — helping us to buy shorts, socks, balls, water bottles, and other key equipment, and to cover transport and pitch hire. Their support has allowed us to get this programme off the ground and to dream of building something truly elite.”
The school has entered the East Wales Premier League (North) this year, with ambitions to progress to the Schools and Colleges leagues within the next three years.
Pennant Walters’ managing director, Dale Hart, said:
“We’re delighted to once again support Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun and its talented young rugby players. The school plays such an important role in developing local talent and providing opportunities within the Cynon Valley.
“Our community funds exist to make a real difference to the areas where we operate, and we’re proud that this £3,000 donation helps to keep young people engaged in both sport and education. We wish the team every success in their return season.”
Ceri added:
“We’re hugely grateful to Pennant Walters for their ongoing commitment to rugby and education in the Cynon Valley. The boys are proud to wear their name on our kit — and we’ll do everything we can to make them proud on the pitch.”
