Cardiff University slammed for opening Kazakhstan campus amid ongoing financial uncertainty

The Welsh Conservatives have criticised the opening of Cardiff University’s Kazakhstan campus amid the university’s ongoing financial difficulties. Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, argues that with the university facing difficult financial decisions, the money spent on the campus could have been better spent on protecting Welsh jobs.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, said:

“Cardiff University is the largest in Wales, yet at a time of financial pressure, choosing to pour resources into a campus 3,700 miles away while Welsh jobs remain at risk is completely unacceptable.

“Opening an overseas campus while courses are still under threat is a tone-deaf decision, we need to back Welsh jobs and skills, not build overseas campuses.

“Wales should always come first and that means protecting Welsh education and Welsh jobs before anything else.”
