Food security still an uncertainty in Wales

With the First Minister giving evidence at the UK Covid Inquiry, the Minister for Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths MS, deputised for the First Minister at First Minister’s Questions.

Commenting on the exchange, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies MS said:

“The war in Ukraine has shown how vital food security is. Shockingly, thirty years ago we used to be 75% self-sufficient in Wales but now we are under 60%.

“It isn’t good enough for the Welsh Government to say they care about this, it needs a target to hit. Unless we have a target and a plan there’s a fear that in ten years’ time, we could go backwards even further.

“I challenged the minister to adopt a target, in order to ensure Wales’ food security and to get our self-sufficiency levels back to what they used to be.

Unfortunately, the minister was unable to provide a target. It concerns me that a target cannot be agreed upon for improving the sustainability of food in Wales, especially
