Tourist Tax: Back British Holidays urges policymakers to scrap planned tourist taxes.

UK research indicates that 21% of potential holidaymakers would cancel their overnight trips if such a tax were introduced in their destination. Additionally, another 21% would reduce their spending while on holiday.

Back British Holidays is calling on policymakers to reconsider proposals for tourist taxes, as new analysis suggests these levies could significantly harm local tourism economies. In fact, avoiding a tourist tax could benefit local small businesses by attracting greater visitor numbers – something that Back British Holidays is committed to improving.

Several UK local authorities are currently exploring the introduction of visitor levies – often referred to as “tourist taxes”. However, the Back British Holidays campaign warns that this could backfire, costing local businesses millions in lost revenue.  Using official UK research, the campaign highlights that 21% of likely holidaymakers would cancel overnight stays if a tourist tax were introduced in their destination. A further 21% said they would still travel, but cut back on their spending.

Daniel Atwood, spokesperson for Back British Holidays, said:

“Tourist taxes might seem like a small extra charge – but they could have a big impact.

“Local economies depend on visitor spending, and these taxes risk pushing tourists away or reducing how much they spend.

“It’s the wrong move at the wrong time.”

The warning follows the latest Back British Holidays report, which forecasts a 32% drop in domestic holidays and highlights the need to protect the UK’s tourism economy. With councils considering tourist taxes to raise revenue, the campaign argues this approach could backfire – hurting small businesses, jobs, and communities that rely on tourism.

Back British Holidays has also launched a petition calling for urgent Government action, proposing measures that support and incentivise UK holidays.
