A Finance Committee report published today into the Welsh Government’s incoming ‘visitor levy’, included testimonies and views expressing considerable concerns with the bill, from organisations such as ScoutsCymru, Wales Tourism Alliance, the Federation of Small Businesses and others.

The principle of a tourism tax enjoys support of the Welsh Labour Government, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats. The only party in the Senedd in opposition to it are the Welsh Conservatives. The Welsh Government is introducing a visitor levy, or tourism tax, from 2027, with a charge of £1.25 per person per night for most accommodations, and £0.75 for campsites and hostels

Welsh Conservatives continue to argue that the policy must be “axed” to renew confidence in the tourism sector and drive improvements in the Welsh economy.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Sam Rowlands MS said:

“It’s clear that Labour’s toxic tourism tax must be axed.

“The Welsh Labour Government’s own commissioned figures highlight the multi-million-pound risk to the economy, coupled with hundreds of potential job losses.

“The Welsh Conservatives will be voting against the tourism tax and will continue to make the case for a pro-business, common-sense tax policy instead of Labour’s obsession with punishing the tourism sector.”
