Free Pool Access for Armed Forces Veterans and Serving Personnel

Caerphilly County Borough Council is urging eligible residents to apply for a Defence Privilege Card, which supports access to free swimming sessions as part of the Armed Forces Free Swimming Scheme. The Welsh Government has increased funding for the initiative from £45,000 to £80,000 for 2024-2025, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the health and  well-being of veterans and service personnel.

Funded by the Welsh Government and managed by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), the scheme enables serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces to participate in free swimming sessions at participating leisure centres. Swimming is widely recognised for its physical and mental health benefits, helping individuals stay active and maintain well-being.

To take advantage of this scheme, eligible individuals must obtain a Defence Privilege Card by registering through the Defence Discount Service. Once issued, the card must be presented at participating leisure centres to gain free access to swimming sessions.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Sport & Leisure, said:

“We are delighted to see the Welsh Government’s continued investment in the Armed Forces Free Swimming Scheme. This initiative not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by our service personnel and veterans but also provides them with an accessible way to improve their health and well-being. We strongly encourage all eligible individuals in Caerphilly County Borough to sign up for a Defence Privilege Card and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.”
