Responding to his FMQ’s to Labour’s First Minister, Darren Millar MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, highlighted the damaging impact of the UK Labour Government’s death tax on family farms.
Earlier this week Darren met with a dedicated farmer from Monmouthshire who built his family farm from scratch through hard work and determination, ensuring a legacy for future generations. However, his dream of stepping back and watching his family continue his life’s work has been shattered by the UK Labour Government’s decision to tax more family farms through changes to inheritance tax.
Additionally, Darren highlighted a tragic case of a farmer diagnosed with cancer shortly after the budget. He was so concerned about the implications of the inheritance tax on his farm that he decided to decline all treatment as he wanted to ensure that he died before the changes are implemented in April. The man sadly died in recent days.
Commenting following FMQs, Darren Millar MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:
“Labour’s inheritance tax changes are a hammer blow to Welsh family farms, jeopardising the future of the industry and forcing farmers like Nigel, who built their livelihoods over generations to face financial hardship and uncertainty for their families.
“After the Welsh Labour Government clobbered the industry with their, Wales-wide Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, botched Sustainable Farming Scheme and their failure to control bovine TB, these unfair changes add insult to injury.
“These changes will cost lives and livelihoods in rural Wales. It is high time that the Labour Government stand up for Welsh farmers, rather than standing by while the UK Government milks them dry.”
