Where are the UBI recipients outside of Wales and England?
Known as the Basic Income for Care Leavers pilot, the project was designed to help children in Wales leaving the care sector as they turned 18. A total of 635 people benefited from a basic income payment as of July 31, 2023. Of that number, 67 were current or former unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.
Davies asks: where are the UBI recipients outside of Wales and England?
In a Written Question to the Labour Welsh Government, Andrew RT Davies has asked where the three £1,600 per month ‘Basic Income’ recipients are resident, given that they are said to live outside Wales and England, with the cost to taxpayers being well in excess of £100,000.
Commenting, Andrew RT Davies MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives said:
“Labour’s “Universal Basic Income pilot” was flawed for many reasons. Not least their desire to pay illegal immigrants £1,600 a month.
“It’s now emerged they paid the cash to people who live outside Wales and England.
“I asked where these people are based, but they refused to say.
“The people of Wales will be asking why.”
