Turtle, Octopus and Seashell – Introducing new names for our children’s wards at Prince Charles Hospital
When you visit the children’s wards at Prince Charles Hospital(PCH) you won’t be looking for wards 31 and 32 any longer, it is now Turtle Ward (31) and Octopus Ward (32) for which you will be looking.
A big thank you to the children and young people who entered a competition to choose the new ward names. Turtle Ward was a firm favourite, with Octopus following close behind; the next favourite was Seashell, which will be the new name for the children’s outpatient department.
The unveiling of the new ward names was carried out by one of our patients, 12-year-old Chadley Quinn from Abercynon. Chadley’s mother Laura said the treatment her son received at Prince Charles Hospital was amazing and it was an honour to see Chadley be part of the official re-naming.
In addition to the renaming of the wards, there is now a new sensory area for children to visit during their stay. Emma Probert, ward manager on the unit said: “We are delighted to have engaged with our community and local schools to re-name the wards at PCH. The area is now much more colourful and the new names make the wards easier for parents and families to remember. Adding the sensory room to the area has also made a huge difference in supporting our patients when they are in need of some quiet time. I would like to say a huge thanks to the children and young people of our community, our estates team for organising the ward signage, and to Jewson’s for donating the equipment for the sensory room.”
